Question-Is Centering Prayer Satan’s Doorway?
A Christian perspective
Centering prayer is a term or meditation activity that you may have heard about or you may be involved in. I am going to be addressing this very important subject in depth. A large part of my ministry training was in spiritual warfare. I participated in a spiritual warfare crisis team for a number of years and have taught on the subject. The two subjects, centering prayer and spiritual warfare, are intricately entwined. Please open your mind and consider the information we will be providing you over the next few weeks. Eternity could be at stake for you or someone you know.
Many members of the body of Christ are being shepherded into this activity. It is very popular within many Christian circles. It is endorsed by some denominations and promoted fully by Rick Warren and his “Purpose Driven Life” organization. There are Christian brothers and sisters that have taken on this activity as their personal ministry.
Whenever I hear about someone or a church getting involved in this it tears at my soul. I thought about naming this first article– Centering Prayer–the doorway into “A Dance with the Devil”. But I softened it a little.
The concept of Centering prayer comes directly out of occult theology and practice. It may have come from the original Babylonian religion. With the mystics today it is masked in some Christian “feel good” terminology. But it is the same old occult. Meaning it has purely demonic roots. It originated in eastern occult mysticism and is widely practiced by such today.
The principles and understandings are incorporated into the contemplative prayer theology that is so popular today.
Here are just a few of the principles of Centering Prayer or Contemplative Prayer that I would ask you to think and pray about. Centering Prayer asks the person to quiet their mind and seek a calm or quiet place. Emptying themselves of reality. Emptying themselves of all emotions and contact with God’s creation.
Practicing Christian meditation, on the other hand, requires that we call on the Lord and take in the Word in prayer, actively thinking about it for healing, comfort and renewal. See the difference?
Our natural spirit of life centers in our mind. It is at 1.9 to 3.0 Hrz to be exact. The Holy Spirit, when present within us, is the higher spiritual force. It dwells within us at a higher plane. Some say at about the 3.9 to 5.0 Hrz range. There have been numerous studies on the natural spirit world. But very few on the realm of the Holy Spirit. But many of us can also attest to its existence. All eastern religions and forms of meditation deal with the lower or natural spiritual forces. Or those in the lower frequency. That is one reason they are so easily accessible. The drum beats of the Indian religion. The chants and mantras of eastern meditation. They all play into our natural or lower spiritual force. And it all happens in our mind. If you are having a hard time with this, simply Google and do some study on it. The earliest tests I found were conducted in the 1950’s. They were done along with dream research.
The mystics in the contemplative/centering prayer movement teach those involved to center their thoughts on a “sacred word”. One that is often assigned to them. They use this practice to focus the person away from reality. Well, I’m sorry, but I worship and serve THE living God. The very God who, in the beginning created reality. He is there for us every minute of every day. For the life of me, I can’t come up with one single reason to escape from Him.
God wants us to contact Him through his Son Jesus Christ in prayer, as we meditate on His Word and truth, not by emptying our mind, being still, not thinking, and “feeling” whatever we can spiritually.
Nowhere in the Word does God ask us to empty our minds to seek peace or the truth. He actually tells us to do the opposite. He wants us to come to Jesus in prayer. He wants us to commune with Him and be refreshed. It is only with the Word and the Holy Spirit that we can truly be refreshed and renewed. Remember that our spirit centers in our mind. Through prayer and active meditation we renew and refresh our mind, our body and our spirit. Through the Spirit. The Holy Spirit.
Then there is the whole problem of “What are we opening ourselves up to when we empty ourselves of reality?” When one opens themselves up to the natural spiritual world they are going to experience the natural spiritual world. And all that comes with it.Who fell from heaven and was given the earth and natural spirit world as his kingdom?
Opening ourselves to the Lord should always be our goal. We never have to go anywhere to be with the Lord. Except, maybe to a quiet place.
You are invited to watch this video for a good explanation. It features Pastor Hoggard with Prophetic Research Ministries and Lighthouse Trails. It says its an hour long, but it is only about 15 minutes. It’s very much worth the time.
In Romans chapter 12 verse 2 it says: And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God.
The Word and Spirit of God transform and renew us in our mind. Empty meditation separates us from God.
Psa 119:15 I will think on Your Commandments and have respect to Your ways.
Psa 119:27 Make me to understand the way of Your Commandments, and I will speak of Your wonderful works.
Psa 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction; for Your Word has given me life.
Psa 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge; for I have believed Your Commandments.
Lots more on this topic soon. Here is an article reprint from ONE TRUTH MINISTRY. A ministry of Brian Flynn. I thought the article was very enlightening. Enjoy.
ONE TRUTH MINISTRY
Keating, Kundalini and Contemplative Prayer
By Brian Flynn
The class began with a meditation exercise that we were to practice everyday when we awoke and again each evening. Elinor instructed us to sit with our feet firmly on the ground and to close our eyes. She then asked us to imagine roots or cords extending from the soles of our feet down into the earth. She said to imagine going deeper and deeper to the light, with the heat and power of the earth below us. Her words flowed from one to another and had an almost hypnotic effect on me:
Once the cords reach a certain point, attach the cords to that power. Bring that energy up those roots, up through the soles of your feet, up your legs, and allow them to attach to the base of your spine to the first Chakra. You are now grounded in earth’s energy.
I finally felt I was heading in the right direction and tapping into a world and an energy that would give guidance and insight. Excerpt from Running Against the Wind.
During my years as a New Age medium, grounding myself was one of the first steps required to prepare my mind before performing psychic readings. It was from this series of meditative steps that I was able to hear from my spirit guides. Who could have guessed that years later I would be warning Christians not to imitate this exact same practice?
After I was saved, many church leaders asked me if I would be willing to share my testimony and to offer an explanation of the New Age practices that I used to perform. At first I felt a little apprehensive because although I was involved in these practices personally, I actually knew very little about their origin. This led me to do extensive research on the movement I had left behind.
After several years of research on this topic, I was fortunate to have the chance to speak to Peter Jones who has authored many books on the occult. When I described the meditation process of what we called in class “running our energy” he explained that it was a form of a Kundalini meditation. I had never heard the word used to describe this practice before.
The Sanskrit word Kundalini means the curled one, and is also called Kundalini awakening or the awakening of the serpent. Practitioners describe it as a curled channel in the tailbone area. It can rise through the chakras (psychic centers situated along the spine from the tailbone to the top of the head), creating physical symptoms ranging from sensations of heat and tremors to involuntary laughing or crying, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, rigidity or limpness, and animal-like movements and sounds.
I considered myself fortunate to have never experienced the symptoms that are described above. However, I never knew the reason why until recently. My publisher, Lighthouse Trails Publishing, received a letter from a woman who before becoming a Christian was practicing Kundalini. After reading my book, she offered an interesting insight as to why I did not experience any of the negative manifestations of the Kundalini awakening:
First and most startling, when Brian and his wife went to the spiritual coach, to learn to channel, they did a type of grounding exercise which they called “running their energy.” This running of the energy is what saved them from possibly having a neurological crisis. In other words, although the purpose of the class was nefarious, the technique was good! The technique was to keep them “grounded” while they were flying off into the empyrean (the highest heaven) to contact spirits, for their protection. Apparently it worked to this extent: although they became subject to spirit guides, they did not become sick.
People who practice kundalini in America often become sick. Because they are not grounded, for one thing, or if they are grounded, they push the exercise beyond where grounding can physically protect them. When I had my kundalini awakening, I was not grounded and was not taught what it was at all. So I became very sick.
I am not sure if my teacher knew that the grounding portion of the multiple steps to running our energy was to prevent the Kundalini effect or not. When I asked my teacher what were the origins of this practice she often danced around the question. She either did not know or refused to share that information. In either case, does it not seem odd that a spiritual practice whose purpose is to either bring harmony in one’s life or to feel closer to God would have a negative physical manifestation?
On a pro-contemplative spirituality web site, I came across the descriptions of those who had experienced the same effect while practicing contemplative prayer. Here is one example:
“I have been practicing Centering Prayer for 2 ½ years…. I began experiencing Kundalini-like symptoms three months after beginning the practice. They were quite intense at first. They have continued in various forms since then. Lately, I only experience them at the very beginning of prayer. I am not aware of any other moral manifestations. Father [Thomas] Keating advised me personally to ignore them if I could, and if they were too bothersome to “balance the energy” with physical exercise or a yoga practice.”—Gary
Thomas Keating
Is the practice of kundalini and contemplative prayer the same? Father Thomas Keating, who has inspired many evangelical contemplatives like Henri Nouwen, Richard Foster, and Brennan Manning, wrote the foreword to Philip St. Romain’s book, Kundalini Energy and Christian Spirituality. In the forward, Keating acknowledges that kundalini is the same as Christian contemplation. He states:
Since this energy [kundalini] is also at work today in numerous persons who are devoting themselves to contemplative prayer, this book is an important contribution to the renewal of the Christian contemplative tradition. It will be a great consolation to those who have experienced physical symptoms arising from the awakening of kundalini in the course of their spiritual journey … Most spiritual disciplines world-wide insist on some kind of serious discipline before techniques of awakening kundalini are communicated. In Christian tradition … the regular practice of the stages of Christian prayer … contemplation are the essential disciplines…
Keating explains that the reason spiritual directors are needed is to help guide the Christian contemplative is because of the powerful and dangerous nature of kundalini. He says that these “spiritual directors” may need to consult with “Eastern teachers in order to get a fuller understanding.”
The disciples of Jesus Christ did not call upon Eastern teachers to guide them when praying to our Lord. They were the eastern teachers of the truth. Nor is there any warning in the Bible cautioning us about negative physical manifestations when engaging in simple Christian prayer. Because there never is. For years, I have been telling my Christian brothers and sisters that contemplative prayer is an Eastern, cultic form of meditation. Finally, I have a contemplative who admits it to be so. And now that I know about Keating’s declaration that kundalini is the same as contemplative, Richard Foster’s statement makes more sense. In Foster’s book, Prayer: Finding the Heart’s True Home, he states:
I also want to give a word of precaution. In the silent contemplation of God we are entering deeply into the spiritual realm, and there is such a thing as a supernatural guidance that is not divine guidance. While the Bible does not give us a lot of information on the nature of the spiritual world, we do know … there are various orders of spiritual beings, and some of them are definitely not in cooperation with God and his way! … But for now I want to encourage you to learn and practice prayers of protection.… “All dark and evil spirits must now leave.
You can always “bind and cast out “the spirit of lies and the spirit of Deception”.
I believe Foster made these comments because he was well aware that contemplative prayer could be dangerous because it is no different than kundalini. And yet in Celebration of Discipline (p. 13, 1978) he says “We should all without shame enroll in the school of contemplative prayer.”
The unfortunate outcome is that both Thomas Keating and Richard Foster continue to endorse contemplative prayer and encourage others to engage in this un-biblical practice when they know good and well it can have detrimental effects.
How much more evidence do the leaders in our churches require before they repent of promoting this practice When Rick Warren stated in his first book, Purpose Driven Church that Foster’s spiritual formation was a wakeup call to the church, he gave the green light to millions to practice something that could potentially have long or permanent lasting damage on practitioners.
I pray fervently that my fellow Christians will return to the word of God for comfort and knowledge and that they will come to understand the true means of grace that our Heavenly Father has bestowed upon us. Please pray with me that this will come to pass.

My friend, Are you confident where you are going to spend eternity when this all ends? There is an end for all of us some day. Some of us today.
There is only one way to know and be assured– Ask our Father in heaven in Jesus Christs’ name, in prayer today!
Are You Saved from the eternal fate of so many? Are you sure? Ask Him. Find out and be assured.
Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.
When we ask the Lord, in Jesus Christ’s name, He assures us with His peace and understanding. If for any reason you question your salvation, go to a quiet place, alone, and talk to Jesus. Repent of your sins and commit your life to Him. Then go to a bible believing church and get baptized.
He is faithful! He always listens and always responds!

Ammie wrote the Joseph Plan this past weekend. She wrote:
This has been quite an eye opening experience. I wanted to get back and share some things that have happened since I first wrote.
I had a meeting with Bev, my group leader, four weeks ago. I brought all the info I had collected on contemplative prayer. I was proud that I had discovered some truths that she could also use. I met Bev and gave her all my research. To my surprise she wasn’t shocked or even dismayed. Instead of getting angry with Purpose driven and the pastor for getting her involved with this, she got upset with me.
Did that tell me the story. Bev explained that it was a new form of spirituality that the church was introducing. And that if I didn’t approve I should probably find a different church and young persons group.
I since talked to a bunch of my friends in the group and six are leaving with me. We found a real Christian group to belong to and it is actually closer. The youth pastor welcomed us with open arms.
What a relief. We didn’t know. Thank-you pastor for getting out the truth. They honestly are pushing a different view of Christ. I hope others get the strength to go and question their youth pastor about these things.
Blessings from Calvary,
Ammie
Hello Joe,
Thank-you very much for this wonderful question. Joe it’s the spirit of Jezebel, in my opinion. We have many posts and videos that deal with the broader topic of Apostasy in the church. There is also a good video presentation on it.
It basically can be brought down to the basic, core issue of the Godly vs the sensual. It is as simple as a church replacing bible studies with Purpose Driven Life studies.
The real answer to your question lies within all the postings on these subjects. We have spent a lot of time and effort bringing everyone knowledge and revelations on these issues. We pray that everyone takes heed.
God Bless,
Pastor Thomas
I am 18. My youth group at Community Christian just started Contemplative prayer orientation, I think its called. I’m going to give this site information to the leaders. They can’t know about this. Or they wouldn’t be doing it. I’ll get back and tell you what happens.

I have a question. You say that tens of thousands of pastors and churches are using these techniques and that they are harmful and from Satan. How can this be? Can you please explain how thousands and thousands of churches can all be deceived, if they are all being led by the same spirit? Wouldn’t so many of them adopting the same programs be an indication that it is a movement of God?
This doesn’t add up in my way of thinking.
JJ is confused about this. Please clarify it for me.
Just Joe from Redding.
I am including this ministry in my prayers.
Thank-you for your thoughts and concerns. We are concerned also. Does anyone realize that thousands of churches in America have adopted these occult practices?
We are instructed by the Lord to pray with earnestness and a humble heart. Centering prayer is correctly referred to a self centered, self serving, feel good prayer. But please everyone. Don’t let anyone convince you it is a way of communicating with God.
It is clearly possible that when one does Centering prayer, they could be communing with the demons. The reason is that they are playing in their spiritual realm and are there unprotected. And demons are the biggest liars, next to Satan himself.
Whenever a person prays to or with “the spirit within” or any portion of self we are open to demonic influences. Over the last ten years I have been asked to help with a number of situations that meant encountering evil face to face. That isn’t to done casually. Not only is it unhealthy if a person is not spiritually prepared, it can be down right dangerous.
God Bless,
Pastor Thomas Holm
Thank you a lot for sharing this with all of us. I know that Jesus is our only true answer. My church of over 10 years started introducing Centering prayer about three years ago. I talked to the pastor about this, because we had learned a lot about this practice from my brother in law. A former occult worshiper. He has been saved for almost 10 yrs. It is demonic and my wife and I left that church instead of associating with the demonic back splash that can affect all members. Whether they participate or not.
They have gotten so liberal today they also have transformed the beautiful church garden into a web of paths that they encourage everyone to spend time walking through so people can get closer to God.
These things are new age, occultic spirituality. NOT Christian. RUN to a good church.
Blessings to all.

Thanks for raising the alarms on centering prayer. My wife and I both got involved a few years ago. Our church started a special program that was brought into our small group study. They had an outside trainer come in and hold training meeting. But I did see the light.
Yes I saw the light. But it took almost three years. One day I was on Lighthouse Trails website and the light bulb went on. The things they listed as symptoms of demonic expression were almost all happening to me and my wife and a few others in our group. Saralee saw the light before I did. One particular nightmare scared the pants off her. She had never had spiritual entities visit her in her dreams before.
Well one did, one night and it really shook her up. She has been a saved Christian girl for twenty years. When this happened to her she found the LightHouseTrailsResearch website and the light was shown on the truth.
I can’t believe we took the Lord out of the center of our prayers and bought all this junk into our lives.
There is a good ending to this story. Sara eventually convinced me and we left that feel good church and joined a bible believing, non denom, church that is great. My wife and I got married late last year thanks to our new pastor after living together for over three. Praise Jesus. We are both much more at peace now and recognize that we were living in sin for over four.
Part of our prayers each night is for all those still involved in centering prayer and other Purpose Driven garbage.
It’s the religion of the New Age folks. It’s all so happy, happy, happy. But it’s demonic. Get out and save your soul.
We did. Thank-you to this ministry. I’ve already told others about it. Still working on my sister however.
